Mavens Overview: Mix

Mix is a Alain Ducasse restaurant with a spectacular view of the Las Vegas Strip. The restaurant is located on the top floor of THEhotel at Mandalay Bay. As one would expect from a restaurant from Alain Ducasse, Mix has been awarded a single star by the Michelin guide. At one time Ducasse had three restaurants each with three Michelin stars.

As noted in excerpt from the New York Times below, Alain Ducasse is perhaps the ultimate celebrity chef.

With his restaurants, cooking school, many cookbooks, endorsements and line of cooking supplies, Alain Ducasse has been for more than a decade the essence of the celebrity haute chef. For Mr. Ducasse, the chef should not be chained to the kitchen. "The role of the chef," he has said, "is to train people to take care of the clients, who live in the spirit which he develops over the years. The walls of the restaurant sweat his philosophy.''

The internet buzz for Mix is quite favorable, particularly for the spectacular view. The food was almost universally praised, except for the small portions.

Internet Buzz: Mix

  • Wow, is all I can say. We were looking for a very special restaurant to spend our last evening in Vegas, and this one came highly recommended. We were not disappointed.
  • Yea for my first Michelin rated restaurant! What an elegant restaurant to eat at. The decor is unique and the view is quite romantic (you can see the whole strip).
  • Great food with great view and we received a great service. Warning! for a party of four our bill came out to over $400
  • The food?  Sublime.  It was a few months ago so don't remember everything ordered, but it was all great.  I will always remember, however, my entrée.  A ribeye with foie gras, black truffles, and bourbon sauce.  Giant pieces of perfectly seared foie gras.  Mounds of truffle shavings.  Perfectly prepared steak.  One of the best dishes I have ever had.
  • I wish I loved the food as much as the views and atmosphere.
  • If I were to review solely on the hostess, I would have given 1 star. Generously. Once you make it past the gargoyle guarding the gateway, the restaurant is quite good.
  • Mix rests at the top of THE Hotel, part of Mandalay Bay. Beautiful white decor with a hint of old Hollywood elegance surround a grand spiral staircase encircling a modern glass chandelier. Breathtaking!
  • If I were to review solely on the hostess, I would have given 1 star. Generously. Once you make it past the gargoyle guarding the gateway, the restaurant is quite good.
  • Had the Maine lobster salad. The lobster was juicy and delicious with the sweetness of the melon.
  • Had the seared scallops with corn fricassee and crispy bacon, on the waiter's recommendation, and they were amazing!
  • All the food was excellent. Small portions
  • heavenly chocolate soufflé: This might be the best thing MiX does, traditional and rich in flavor, this soufflé is served with a mild pistachio ice cream.
  • I ordered the chicken and lobster surf and turf. It was incredible. I'm usually not a chicken fan, but I knew that it'd be good here, so I went for it. I was not disappointed at all. It was actually a stuffed chicken and it was so moist and flavorful. The lobster was great, of course, too. But I was most impressed with how good the chicken was.
  • Beef Rossini - prime filet mignon topped with seared foie gras and black truffle reduction. The dish, as you could imagine, was super rich and loaded with heavy flavors. I enjoyed it to the last bite... however, it wasn't until we got the check that I found out it was a $77 item on the menu. Ouch. But soooo good.
